If a man is crossing the river And an empty boat collides with his own skiff, Even though he be a bad-tempered man He will not become very angry. But if he sees a man in the boat, He will shout at him to steer clear. If the shout is not heard, he will shout again, And yet again and begin cursing. And all because there is somebody in the boat. Yet if the boat were empty, He would not be shouting, and not angry. If you can empty your own boat Crossing the river of the world, No one will oppose you, No one will seek to harm you. Chuang Tzu, The Way of Chuang Tzu.
Few people are concerned with themselves except in the sense of achieving success. I do not mean that kind of concern. I mean being concerned with the transformation of oneself. But first of all, most of us do not see the importance, the truth, of change; and secondly, we do not know how to change, how to bring about this astonishing, explosive transformation within ourselves. Krishnamurti from Total Freedom.
“I need to learn that I don’t have to be strong any more and that all these tools I have acquired to make me strong are no more than embodiments of my fear, perversions of fragility. I am so wonderfully fragile but so very afraid of that. I am learning here that I need to be weak, beautifully weak, so weak that – as the sadhus say in India – I dissolve.”
Peter Owen Jones Letters from an Extreme Pilgrim.
